Low-lying areas faced the threat of water entering homes, while traffic slowed down considerably across key thoroughfares. Although heavy rains during the monsoon season are not new to Hyderabad, instances of exceptionally high rainfall in short spans raise serious questions about the city's infrastructure capacity.
Waterlogged Roads
The torrential downpour left roads in many areas flooded. The drainage system was overwhelmed and unable to clear the sudden rush of rainwater completely. Water stagnated on main roads as well as internal colony lanes. In some areas, vehicles had to wade through deep water, with two-wheeler riders facing immense difficulties. Lakes, water bodies, and canals once served as natural water management systems for Hyderabad. When it rained, water flowed into lakes and subsequently through natural channels to other areas. Urban expansion has drastically altered this natural system. Therefore, preventing future floods requires more than just clearing surface water—it demands a scientific restructuring of the city's overall stormwater management system.
Public Vigilance Required
During heavy rains, citizens are advised to minimize non-essential travel. Residents in low-lying areas must remain extra vigilant. Caution should be exercised near electrical poles, open manholes, and waterlogged roads. Motorists must drive slowly and observe road conditions. Two-wheeler riders, in particular, should avoid flooded streets and choose alternative, safer routes.
Need for Administrative Coordination
During heavy downpours, departments such as the GHMC, traffic police, disaster management personnel, electricity department, and the Water Board must work in coordination. Waterlogged areas should be identified proactively for swift drainage operations. An effective communication system is vital to keep citizens informed during emergencies. Permanent solutions must be implemented in high-rainfall zones.
Safety Goes Hand in Hand with Development
Hyderabad is growing into a world-class city, advancing rapidly in IT, industrial, and commercial sectors. However, urban development is incomplete without safety. A truly developed city is one where citizens remain safe when it rains. Rather than relying on temporary measures after every heavy downpour, the stormwater drainage system must be developed with long-term planning. Lakes, canals, and natural drainage paths must be preserved, and urban planning must factor in future generations.
