Trinet News | August 14, 2026 Special Article: By Peri Nageswara Rao

Kanna Lakshminarayana stands among the rare leaders in Andhra Pradesh's political history to have completed five decades of a long political journey. His political path, which began during his student days, has seen him serve as a legislator, minister, key figure in national politics, Andhra Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President, and currently as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Sattenapalli.

Born on August 13, 1954, Kanna Lakshminarayana marked his 72nd birthday on August 13, 2026, alongside commemorating nearly five decades of political presence.

Political Steps from Student Days

Kanna Lakshminarayana's political life did not begin with a routine entry. As early as his student days, he developed a keen interest in public issues and social matters. He made his mark in politics by leading the Guntur District Student Congress. Subsequently, he assumed various responsibilities in the Youth Congress and grew into a state-level leader. Throughout his political journey, he demonstrated that leadership is not merely about holding office, but rather about a deep bond with party workers, continuous engagement with the public, and a responsive attitude toward problems.

Five Terms in the Legislative Assembly

First stepping into the legislature in 1989 from the Pedakakurapadu constituency, Kanna Lakshminarayana went on to represent the same constituency for four consecutive terms. In 2009, he won from the Guntur West constituency to become a legislator for the fifth time. He entered the assembly once again by winning from Sattenapalli in 2024. The fact that the same leader has repeatedly won the mandate of the people while navigating various political landscapes stands as a testament to his political strength.

Diverse Responsibilities as Minister

Kanna Lakshminarayana also possesses extensive experience as a minister. Having taken up responsibilities in the state cabinet starting in 1991, he subsequently managed key portfolios such as Transport, Heavy Industries, Food Processing, Commerce, Export Promotion, Housing, and Agriculture. Handling the Agriculture portfolio—which directly affects the lives of crores of people—remains a significant milestone in his political life.

Political Experience Continued Despite Party Changes

Circumstances in politics change over time. Kanna Lakshminarayana transitioned from Congress to the Bharatiya Janata Party, and subsequently to the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Having joined the BJP in 2014, he became the Andhra Pradesh BJP State President in 2018. In 2023, he resigned from the BJP and joined the Telugu Desam Party. He contested and won as the TDP candidate from Sattenapalli in the 2024 elections, and currently serves as the legislator for that constituency.

Notably, rather than party shifts, it is his vast political experience, public relations, and grassroots connections that have carved out a unique place for him in his political journey.

Bond with Party Workers

A review of Kanna Lakshminarayana's long career reveals that party workers hold a special place in his political style. He brings experience in providing leadership from the village level to the state level. The true strength of a politician is not revealed when they hold power; it is known when the people and party workers stand by them even in times without power. From this perspective, Kanna Lakshminarayana's five-decade journey serves as an engaging subject of study for political observers.

A 50-Year Journey as a Lesson

It is no small feat for someone who entered politics as a youth to remain a public representative even after five decades. Over this period, state politics has witnessed numerous shifts. New parties emerged, old parties weakened, electoral equations altered, and leaderships changed. Yet, Kanna Lakshminarayana maintained his presence in the political arena. Therefore, his 50-year political journey should be viewed not just as an individual success story, but as a reflection of Andhra Pradesh's political evolution.

Inspiration for the New Generation

Today's young political leaders have much to learn from Kanna Lakshminarayana's journey—maintaining connections with the people, facing electoral defeats, making decisions suited to political realities, and sustaining a long tenure in public life.

As he completes five decades in politics, congratulatory messages for Kanna Lakshminarayana are naturally pouring in. Fifty years in politics represents not just half a century of an individual's life, but the experience of closely witnessing political transformations across multiple generations.

Kanna Lakshminarayana's 50-year political journey is an amalgamation of struggles, positions, victories, defeats, party switches, public service, and political experience. In contemporary politics, many leaders rise rapidly and fade away just as quickly. However, sustaining one's presence in public life for five decades is extraordinary. Political victory is not determined by a single election; the true measure of a leader's longevity lies in how many years they stayed among the people, how many generations they connected with, and how many political storms they weathered. Viewed from that angle, Kanna Lakshminarayana's 50-year political journey forms a distinctive chapter in the political history of Andhra Pradesh. Heartfelt congratulations to veteran leader Kanna Lakshminarayana on completing 50 years in politics.
