Safeguarding the roots of culture and tradition, and preserving classical arts, is akin to a sacred ritual, highly significant in today's fast-paced modern world. Unless someone takes the initiative for this cultural preservation, the fruits of this endeavor cannot be shared with the masses. It is possible only through dedication, exploration, and widespread propagation. Believing in this noble cause, Bathina Vikram Kumar (Vikram Goud) took up the mantle of nurturing traditional classical dances.
Vikram Kumar's journey in the arts is multi-faceted—he is a Kuchipudi dancer, theater director, international dance festival organizer, and a journal editor, all rolled into one. His journey with ghungroos began in childhood under his father's encouragement. Showing immense interest in dance from his school days, he completed his Master of Arts (M.A.) in Kuchipudi with distinction from Andhra University. During his postgraduate studies, he played an active role in establishing a dedicated 'Dance Department' at the university. Furthermore, he played lead roles in Kuchipudi dance ballets, representing the university at national-level drama and dance festivals and winning widespread acclaim.
Significant Contribution to Research
Alongside his classical dance practice, Vikram Kumar made remarkable contributions to dance research. During his M.A. studies, he conducted in-depth research on "Shiva Tandavam - Sapta Tandavam in Kuchipudi." His research thesis, comparing these concepts with the works of renowned poet Puttaparthi Narayanacharyulu, received 100% approval from Andhra University, standing as a testament to his scholarly depth.
Experimental Choreography and Theater
Without crossing the boundaries of traditional Kuchipudi, Vikram Kumar's choreographic experiments, reflecting modern styles, have deeply captivated art lovers. The experimental Kuchipudi dance ballet "Chenchu Lakshmi Narasimha Kalyanam," based on the history of the Simhachalam Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy, is truly a visual wonder. Starting with Kuchipudi classicality and concluding with folk elements, this spectacular production created history by staging over a hundred performances nationwide.
Swachh Ganga - Swachh Bharat: Designed around the theme of 'Bhagiratha Vilasam,' this dance ballet highlights the importance of pure drinking water and environmental protection. Productions like 'Maha Visakha Vaibhavam,' 'Sri Krishna Leelalu,' 'Society for Future,' and 'Youth Never Sleeps' reflect his creativity. Special mention must be made of the stage play "Vande Mataram," which received critical acclaim as an experimental play during the Nandi Natakaotsavalu organized by the state government in the year 2000.
Century of Excellence in Theater
Vikram Kumar has also left a distinct mark in acting and directing. He has played lead roles in historical, mythological, and social dramas such as 'Kanyasulkam,' 'Satya Harischandra,' and 'Bobbili Yuddham.' The plays directed by him deeply impressed former Indian President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, UGC officials, and NAAC committee members.
For his continuous service to the cultural sector, he has received numerous national and international awards:
