The Telangana Chief Minister has responded strongly against the central government's policies of withholding clearances for development initiatives under the guise of environmental protection, while addressing issues related to Telangana's progress. Citing environmental protection regulations in the United States as an example, he launched a critique against the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Chief Minister stated that states need adequate support from the Centre regarding development activities, industrial projects, and infrastructure creation. While acknowledging that environmental protection is of utmost importance, he opined that regulations should not be implemented in a manner that obstructs development. He noted that even in the US, there are strict environmental rules, but special policies are implemented there to strike a balance between development and environmental conservation. He emphasized that there should be a clear policy regarding clearances required for development projects, and works concerning public interest should not be delayed unnecessarily.
The CM pointed out that several key projects and infrastructure works concerning Telangana's development require environmental and central clearances. He urged the central government to maintain an equitable outlook toward the development of all states. He stated that the Centre has the responsibility to act beyond politics when it comes to development.
Clarifying that they never suggested neglecting environmental protection, the CM opined that halting development works indefinitely in the name of environmental clearances is not the right approach. He stated that for industries generating employment opportunities, roads, and other infrastructure projects to be completed on time, transparency and speed are essential in the clearance process.
The CM remarked that while Prime Minister Modi frequently talks about national development and rapid infrastructure building, the Centre needs to act with the same urgency regarding state-related projects. He asserted that there should be uniform standards for development, and discrimination against states should not occur. The CM mentioned that the state government has already brought several pending issues and central assistance due to Telangana to the notice of the Centre multiple times. He urged the central government to grant clearances for state development programs swiftly and take a positive decision in the interest of the public.
The CM clarified that both environmental protection and industrial development are necessary, and a proper balance must be maintained between the two. He stated that policies should be adopted to advance development activities while safeguarding nature. Pointing out that modern technology is available, he noted that it is possible to implement development projects using methods that minimize environmental harm. Citing the US as an example, he noted that developed nations continue economic growth while prioritizing environmental concerns. He added that for India to achieve rapid development, the Centre and states must work with mutual cooperation.
This issue has sparked political debate in Telangana. Ruling party leaders are supporting the CM's remarks, demanding that the central government provide more cooperation for Telangana's development. Meanwhile, opposition parties are also reacting to the issue in their own way. The state government is demanding that the Centre immediately grant clearances for projects essential to Telangana's development.
The CM urged the Centre to extend full cooperation to the state government for public welfare, employment generation, industrial development, and infrastructure expansion. He noted that environmental protection is not just a single state's concern, but a global responsibility of humanity. At the same time, he emphasized that public development and improving living standards are also the primary responsibilities of governments.
Overall, the Telangana Chief Minister's criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and central government policies, referencing US environmental clearances, has become a major talking point in political circles.
