TRINET NEWS | 24 AUGUST 2026 The political controversy surrounding the Konda family in Telangana Congress is intensifying by the day. The dispute, which began with remarks made by Minister Konda Surekha's daughter, Konda Sushmitha, against Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, has now reached the Congress high command. In this backdrop, Minister Konda Surekha's meeting with AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge in Bengaluru on Sunday has gained significant political importance.
In her reply previously submitted to the TPCC Disciplinary Committee, Surekha stated that it was not correct to hold her responsible for her daughter's comments, emphasizing that those remarks were entirely personal. She clarified that family ties do not obligate one person to be responsible for another's political views. She also expressed her utmost respect for the Congress leadership and party discipline.
Surekha met Kharge amid developments such as a show-cause notice issued to her by the party and demands from some Congress leaders for action against her. Reports indicate that she brought to Kharge's attention that a political conspiracy is being orchestrated against her and her family. She also reportedly explained that she has never criticized the Congress party or the Gandhi family. Reports revealed that the meeting lasted for over an hour. Surekha is believed to have discussed current political developments, her daughter's comments, the party notice, and the criticism against her with Kharge.
Discipline is Paramount: Kharge's Key Instructions
After listening to Konda Surekha's explanation, Kharge reportedly offered crucial advice, emphasizing that party discipline is paramount. Reports state he advised that internal party matters should not be criticized publicly and that every leader must strictly adhere to Congress party discipline. Kharge also reportedly made it clear that a comprehensive explanation on this matter must be submitted to the State Congress Committee.
Consequently, this issue has evolved from a state-level dispute into a matter under the scrutiny of the Congress high command. The TPCC Disciplinary Committee is yet to discuss Konda Surekha's explanation once again.
The controversy began with Sushmitha's comments made during a birthday celebration event for Konda Surekha in Geesukonda on August 19. Her remarks regarding Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and developments within the Congress party caused a major political storm. The party leadership took these comments very seriously. Since Sushmitha does not hold Congress membership, direct disciplinary action could not be taken against her, leading to reports that a show-cause notice was instead issued to her mother, Konda Surekha.
Responding to this, Surekha clarified that she had nothing to do with her daughter's remarks. She argued that being members of the same family does not mean their political views must be identical. Stating that issuing a notice to her goes against the principles of natural justice, she requested the notice to be withdrawn.
Criticism from MLAs
Meanwhile, some Congress MLAs and MLCs reacted strongly to the Konda Surekha episode. National media reports stated that several leaders demanded strict action over remarks and developments that breach party discipline. Some reportedly even demanded her removal from the cabinet.
Political analysts, however, view this dispute not merely as a family matter, but as an internal conflict within the ruling Congress party involving leadership, discipline, and personal political differences.
Surekha's Sharp Counter-Response
Reports also surfaced alleging that Konda Surekha claimed someone was backing the MLAs who were criticizing her. She expressed anguish that her family continues to be targeted despite her providing an explanation. These developments have further exposed internal divisions within the Congress party.
On the other hand, reports indicate that the party high command is closely monitoring the situation. Before making a final decision on Konda Surekha, they are likely to review her explanation, the disciplinary committee's opinion, and reports from the state Congress leadership.
Where Will the Final Decision Lead?
Currently, all eyes are on the upcoming meeting of the TPCC Disciplinary Committee. Although the committee has already examined Surekha's response, reports suggest it decided to postpone a final decision and meet once more. The directives issued by the party high command to Konda Surekha following her meeting with Kharge are expected to be a crucial turning point in this controversy.
While Surekha is offering explanations for the allegations against her, the high command has seemingly sent a clear message regarding party discipline. Kharge's advice that Congress prioritizes party discipline over individual leadership has become central to this issue. What decision the state party leadership will take regarding Surekha, whether the disciplinary committee will withdraw the notice or recommend further action, has now become the primary subject of discussion in Telangana politics.
