Kathmandu: Massive flash floods have caused severe devastation in Nepal. Following a sudden and ferocious rise in the Bhotekoshi River in the mountainous regions near the China-Nepal border, several villages were submerged. Houses, vehicles, roads, bridges, and hydropower projects were swept away by the raging floodwaters.

Officials report that the death toll is likely to rise. According to the latest official information, at least nine people have died. This disaster has severely impacted the Syaprubesi and Timure areas in Rasuwa district. With the sudden surge of water in the Bhotekoshi basin, authorities have issued high alerts and initiated the evacuation of residents living along the riverbanks to safer locations.

Hundreds Missing

Reports indicate that hundreds of people are missing in the floods. Preliminary data from Nepal's tourism sector states that 384 tourists are missing, including foreign nationals from India, the US, Britain, Malaysia, and other countries. The process of officially verifying the number of missing persons is ongoing. Regarding Indian nationals, some reports suggest over 100 are missing. However, as rescue operations are underway, these figures are subject to change, and caution must be exercised until final official statistics are released.

Heavy Damage to Bridges and Roads

Numerous bridges and roads have been damaged by the ferocious floodwaters. In some areas, bridges were completely washed away, halting transportation. Debris such as mud, rocks, and uprooted trees piled upon roads has made it difficult for rescue teams to reach affected areas. Due to the raging river currents, even helicopters were unable to land safely in certain locations, making the identification of missing persons and the evacuation of victims a significant challenge.

Blow to Hydropower Projects

The floods have also dealt a massive blow to Nepal's hydropower sector. Several facilities related to power generation, transmission, and distribution have been damaged. Nepal electricity officials reported that power generation capacity of approximately 430 megawatts has been affected. Since the hydropower sector is vital to Nepal's economy, the government faces the massive task of restoring the damaged projects.

Nepal Army in Rescue Operations

Amidst the disaster, the Nepal Army, police, and armed police forces have been deployed. Search operations for the missing are being conducted using helicopters. Rescue efforts, distribution of food and emergency supplies, and evacuation of those trapped in hazardous areas are ongoing. The Nepal Army stated that at least 25 people had been rescued by Wednesday afternoon. However, rescue operations are facing severe hurdles due to adverse weather conditions in the hilly terrain, damaged roads, and raging river currents.

What Caused the Floods?

Officials have not yet fully confirmed the exact cause of the sudden floods. However, experts preliminarily estimate that ice and rock landslides in the mountainous region temporarily blocked the river flow, followed by a sudden release of water, resulting in the massive flood. Climate change, melting glaciers, heavy rains, and landslides in the Himalayan region increase the risk of flash floods. Experts have therefore recommended strengthening early warning systems in mountainous areas.

Severe Impact on the Chinese Border

The impact of the floods was not limited to Nepal. Chinese official media reported that the Gyirong border trade center in Tibet on the Chinese side also suffered heavy damage due to landslides and floods. Officials noted that several people went missing there as well, with potential heavy loss of life. This incident has also disrupted border movement and trade routes between Nepal and China.

Neighboring Areas on Alert

With floodwaters likely to reach downstream areas, authorities have issued high alerts along river basins. People residing near the Bhotekoshi, Trishuli, and Narayani river basins have been advised to stay away from riverbanks and continuously monitor the situation.

Although floods and landslides are common during Nepal's monsoon season from June to September, the sheer intensity of this flash flood is alarming. A large number of casualties have already been recorded due to floods, landslides, and lightning during this year's monsoon disasters.

Rehabilitation is the Main Challenge Now

Currently, locating missing persons and rescuing survivors has become the government's primary objective. Subsequently, damaged roads, bridges, electricity systems, houses, and other infrastructure must be restored. The Nepal Government is coordinating all departments to expedite rescue operations. Supporting bereaved families, providing immediate relief to victims, and coordinating with foreign embassies regarding missing foreign nationals have also become critical.

Although natural disasters cannot be entirely prevented, casualties can be significantly reduced through early warnings, scientific monitoring, continuous observation of river flows, and the evacuation of people from danger zones. This catastrophic flood in Nepal has once again highlighted the urgent need to strengthen disaster management systems in the Himalayan region.
