NEW DELHI, SEPT 23 (TRINET NEWS):
The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract worth ₹810.79 crore with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) to procure 160 Satellite Smart Anti-Airfield Weapons (SAT-SAAW) along with associated equipment for the Indian Air Force (IAF). These weapons are being acquired under the 'Buy Indian - Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured' (IDDM) category.
The agreement was signed in New Delhi on September 23, 2026, in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. SAT-SAAW is an air-to-ground precision glide bomb that can be deployed from fighter aircraft such as the Jaguar, Hawk, and Su-30 MKI. It possesses the capability to destroy enemy airbases from a standoff distance without entering enemy air defense range.
This advanced weapon system has been indigenously designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). The project utilizes 60 percent indigenous content and technology. Key subsystems, including the Inertial Measurement Unit, Long Impact Delay Fuse, and Twin Store Carrier, will also be manufactured domestically, further strengthening self-reliance in the defense sector.
The supply of these weapons is scheduled between 2027–28 and 2028–29. The Ministry of Defence stated that the induction of SAT-SAAW into the Indian Air Force will enhance uninterrupted operational capabilities under adverse conditions and further solidify the nation's defense preparedness.
