Private companies are rapidly entering a launch system that was previously dominated by the government-run Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). In this context, the Kulasekarapattinam small satellite launch facility, currently under construction in Tamil Nadu's Thoothukudi district, is becoming crucial for the country's space sector.

When launching into certain polar orbits from Sriharikota, the rocket's flight path has to be altered to avoid landmasses. Since Kulasekarapattinam allows for direct southward launches, this issue is significantly reduced.

As a result of reforms initiated by the central government to open up India's space sector to private enterprises, many new startups have entered the field. Companies like Agnikul Cosmos and Skyroot Aerospace are working on indigenous rocket technology. Private firms have already moved forward to develop their own rocket launch facilities in India. Agnikul's construction of a private launch pad within the Sriharikota range stands as a significant milestone in Indian space history. However, once the Kulasekarapattinam facility becomes fully operational, it will provide expanded opportunities for both government and private sectors in small satellite launches.

Moving forward, the Kulasekarapattinam launch center is aimed at accommodating over two dozen small satellite launches per year. Work is underway on mobile launch structures, rail systems, radar installations, communication equipment, and security systems.

With achievements like Chandrayaan, Mangalyaan, solar missions, and space docking, India has already drawn global attention on the world space map. Now, with small satellite launches, private rocket companies, and the expansion of commercial space services, India's space sector is entering a new phase. Once the Kulasekarapattinam facility is fully available, launch opportunities will increase for both government and private rockets. This will enable India to secure an even stronger position in the global small satellite launch market.
