A major development has taken place in the liquor transport scam case that caused a sensation in Andhra Pradesh politics. Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials on Sunday arrested former Andhra Pradesh minister and senior Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) leader Karumuri Nageswara Rao. Latest information indicates that the arrest was made near his residence in Kondapur, Hyderabad.
The ED is continuing its investigation into allegations of irregularities in liquor transport tenders, diversion of funds, and illegal financial transactions. Officials stated that this case pertains to transport contracts awarded under the aegis of the Andhra Pradesh State Beverages Corporation for supplying liquor from depots to government liquor shops. The probe agency alleges that the tender process was manipulated in favor of a few, and funds were diverted through intermediary firms and sub-contracts.
According to the ED, while certain entities appeared as primary contractors in the tender process, there are suspicions that actual transport operations were carried out by other firms and local contractors. The ED is investigating the case based on an Andhra Pradesh vigilance complaint which stated that the state exchequer suffered a loss of approximately Rs 195.33 crore. Allegations of favoring selected companies by altering liquor transport tender rules remain a core focus of the investigation.
The investigative agency had previously taken action against individuals belonging to Karumuri Nageswara Rao's family. His son, Karumuri Sunil Kumar, was arrested by the ED in June. The ED had previously conducted searches at various locations in Hyderabad. The agency officially stated that searches conducted at premises linked to Karumuri Nageswara Rao, his son Sunil Kumar, and other accused persons resulted in the seizure of valuables, cash, property documents, and papers related to suspicious agreements. The ED reported that luxury watches and cash were also seized.
Suspecting that ill-gotten funds in this case may have been channeled through various routes, the ED is investigating the angle of money laundering. The probe agency alleges that certain amounts of cash and bank transactions reached the concerned individuals. However, it must be noted that these allegations are still under investigation, and final adjudication must take place in a court of law.
