A new chapter has begun in the aviation history of Andhra Pradesh with the commencement of commercial flight services from the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport built in Bhogapuram, Vizianagaram district. The new airport officially commenced commercial operations starting at 12:01 AM on August 17th. The long-cherished dream of the people of North Andhra was realized as the first commercial flight arrived in Bhogapuram from Hyderabad.

The launch of the Bhogapuram airport is not merely the introduction of a new aviation facility; it is considered a development that opens a new gateway for the economic, industrial, and tourism growth of the North Andhra region. Designed to meet future demands as an alternative to the limitations of aviation infrastructure in Visakhapatnam, this greenfield airport is well-equipped.

Authorities made special welcome arrangements to mark the touchdown of the first flight at the new airport. A traditional water cannon salute was given to the aircraft. Notably, passengers who arrived on the inaugural flight were presented with Etikoppaka wooden toys as mementos, symbolizing Andhra Pradesh's traditional artistry.

With the opening of the Bhogapuram airport, regular civil flight services that were previously operated from the old airport in Visakhapatnam have been shifted to the new facility. Effective August 17, the airport code previously used for Visakhapatnam airport has been transferred to the Bhogapuram airport. Regular commercial flight services at the old airport have ceased.

This change is also crucial for passengers. Although the code for Visakhapatnam will still appear on tickets, regular commercial flight arrivals and departures are taking place from the Bhogapuram airport starting August 17. Consequently, passengers need to check the travel routes and transportation facilities to reach the airport well in advance of their flights.

The Bhogapuram airport is expected to provide much better air connectivity to North Andhra. In the initial phase, domestic flight services to various cities are being made available. The launch of flight services to cities like Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Vijayawada will benefit sectors such as business, education, healthcare, employment, and tourism. The Bhogapuram airport is also likely to become a key hub for the expansion of international flight services.

It is anticipated that this airport will serve not only Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, and Anakapalli districts but also nearby areas in Odisha. With the development of the airport, roads, hotels, commercial establishments, transport systems, and residential areas are expected to expand around Bhogapuram. The airport is also expected to serve as a hub to attract new industries and investments.

Employment opportunities for local youth, both direct and indirect, are likely to increase. This is also a boon for the tourism sector. Better air connectivity will become available for tourists coming from various parts of the country to destinations such as Araku, Lambasingi, Borra Caves, Simhachalam, the Visakhapatnam coastline, and tourist spots in Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts. An increase in foreign tourist arrivals will also benefit the local economy.

For the Bhogapuram airport to become an economic engine for the development of North Andhra rather than just a place for flights to land and take off, auxiliary infrastructure must be developed in parallel. The government needs to pay special attention to aspects such as high-speed transport, public transport, taxi services, and road expansion from the airport to Visakhapatnam city.

The transition of flight operations from the old airport to the new one on the very day of its inauguration is also a massive administrative undertaking. Airlines, airport authorities, and transport agencies need to work in coordination to ensure passengers face no inconvenience.

The primary objective behind the construction of the Bhogapuram airport is to strongly connect the North Andhra region with domestic and international air routes. If this goal is fully realized, significant changes are likely to occur in the economy of not just Visakhapatnam, but the entire North Andhra region.

August 17, 2026, will go down as a significant date in the history of North Andhra. With the landing of the first commercial flight at the new airport at midnight, aviation officially took off from Bhogapuram. This is not just the landing of the first flight—it is the dawn of a new journey for the development of North Andhra. The Bhogapuram airport is the new sky gateway for North Andhra. People hope that alongside flight services, industries, tourism, employment, and investments will expand, ushering in a new era of development for the region.
