Tri Net News, Hyderabad, August 26, 2026, Chennai: Aiming to further modernize Tamil Nadu's public transport system, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay flagged off new bus services. A total of 250 new buses were made available to the public in an event held at the Secretariat premises in Chennai. Among these, 130 are low-floor AC electric buses, while the remaining 120 are standard new buses allocated to various state transport corporations.
These new buses will provide the public with a more comfortable and eco-friendly public transport facility. Since the 130 AC electric buses introduced for the Chennai Metropolitan Transport Corporation are designed with a low floor, senior citizens, women, and persons with disabilities can easily board and alight. The government is moving forward with the goal of reducing air and noise pollution in the city through these electricity-operated buses.
Over Rs. 290 crore was spent in total for the procurement of these new buses. Of this, 130 AC electric buses have been specially made available for the people of Chennai city. While the government is already expanding the use of electric buses in Chennai, the introduction of these new AC buses is considered another key milestone in the public transport sector. The government is taking steps towards prioritizing AC buses among newly purchased public buses in Tamil Nadu in the future. The transport department is formulating plans with the goal of making public transport services even higher quality and more comfortable.
These new AC electric buses will also be operated on routes connecting major areas in Chennai such as the airport, IT corridor, Kilambakkam, and Koyambedu. Consequently, travel will become much more comfortable for employees, students, and regular passengers. Officials believe that these buses will play a crucial role in reducing traffic congestion as well as the usage of personal vehicles.
The government is moving forward with three main objectives in Tamil Nadu's public transport sector: modern technology, environmental protection, and passenger comfort. These new AC electric buses flagged off by CM Vijay are set to give Chennai's city transport system a new look.
