Trinet News – August 24, 2026: Bank employees and officer associations across the country have called for a strike to press for their core demands. Employee unions have taken to the path of agitation, specifically demanding the implementation of a five-day work week. The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) demanded that the government immediately resolve the issues faced by lakhs of employees and officers working in the banking sector.

Bank unions have announced a nationwide strike on September 11. They warned that if the government does not respond positively to their demands, they will launch more intense agitations in subsequent phases. The unions announced that they are preparing for a three-day strike starting September 28, and if necessary, an indefinite strike starting October 26.

Five-Day Work Week is the Main Demand

Currently, most banks remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, while working on the remaining Saturdays. However, bank employee unions are now demanding a five-day work week with two holidays on both Saturday and Sunday. Many organizations in the public and private sectors have already implemented the five-day work policy, and employee unions want the same policy extended to the banking sector.

Although positive understandings were reached during previous discussions regarding the implementation of a five-day work week, employees are expressing dissatisfaction over the lack of a final decision from the government. Unions state that bank employees are continuously providing services to meet the financial needs of the public. They point out that stress on employees is increasing due to rising workloads, staff shortages, and changing banking systems driven by technology. Under these circumstances, they believe providing two days of rest per week is essential.

Objections to Performance-Based Incentives

Another major demand of bank employees relates to the performance-based incentive system. Employee unions are objecting to this system proposed by the government. They clarified that incentive schemes should not create disparities among employees and demanded that incentives be provided in an equitable and fair manner for all. Specifically, they noted that it is improper to provide incentives in one way for senior-level officers and another way for other employees. They demanded that a final decision be made only after holding consultations with employee unions on this matter.

Demand for Resolution of Pension Issues

Unions stated that pension issues concerning bank employees and retirees have also been pending for a long time. They want the government to resolve issues such as periodic pension revisions and equal benefits for pensioners. A key demand of the employee unions is to provide employees currently under the National Pension System (NPS) the option to choose the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). Unions stated that it is the government's responsibility to provide financial security to employees after retirement.

Nationwide Strike on September 11

Banking services are likely to be somewhat disrupted due to the nationwide strike scheduled for September 11, particularly impacting operations in public sector banks. Cash transactions, check clearances, and certain office services may experience delays. Because holidays fall immediately before and after the strike dates, banking services in some regions could be affected for several consecutive days. People are advised to complete their urgent banking tasks in advance. However, digital services such as ATMs, mobile banking, and internet banking are expected to remain available. Nonetheless, customers need to take precautionary measures keeping their cash requirements in mind.

Phased Agitations

Bank unions warned that if their demands are not met, they will escalate their agitations in phases. They initially decided to hold a one-day strike on September 11, followed by a three-day strike starting September 28. The unions announced that if the government still fails to respond, they will launch an indefinite strike starting October 26. This development is expected to have a severe impact on the banking sector, particularly affecting monthly and half-yearly financial operations.

Government Must Respond

In light of the bank employees' strike announcement, employee unions are urging the government to respond immediately and initiate talks. They stated that a strike is the last resort and that issues can only be resolved through dialogue. They are demanding that the government consider the employees' demands favorably and make a swift decision on the five-day work week. They also requested clear assurances on pension issues, incentive schemes, and other matters concerning employee welfare.

Overall, bank employees across the country have once again prepared for a struggle with key demands including the implementation of a five-day work week, resolution of pension issues, and a fair incentive policy for employees. Will the government resolve the issues through talks before the September 11 strike, or will the banking sector head toward a series of strikes? This has now become a topic of nationwide interest.
