Align Your Life with a Purpose

The doctor's room was quiet. The wife was anxious about what the doctor would say regarding her husband's health condition. "We have done everything we could. He has no more than another hour left. Please call all his relatives," the doctor said. She immediately walked into her husband's room and silently looked at him in grief. Realizing from her expression that "he has no time left," the husband sank into deep thoughts.

"I should have gone to school when I was young, listened carefully to the teachers, and studied well. At that time, chasing friends and fun, I wasted time ignoring my father's advice. Because of that, I couldn't gain a strong grip on my education. Had I studied well, I could have secured a high-level job. Even if I want to achieve such a position now, I cannot get back my childhood when I should have been studying. I am now in a position where I cannot even afford the fees required to give my children a good education. Running the household has become impossible unless I toil day and night. None of the friends I roamed around with, leaving my education behind, are by my side now to support my family. When I should have studied diligently, I set education aside for fun. Now, when I should be having fun with my family, I have to sweat just to run the household. Failing to provide my children with adequate education, good clothes, and security as a father—isn't this entirely my negligence?" he tormented himself internally.

"But there is nothing I can do now. My life is going to end in a little while anyway," he silently apologized with tears to his heart that had worked for him all these years, as an atonement for his negligence. No matter how much he regrets now, lost time will not return, and the departing life will not stop. This situation is like "taking a comb into hand after all the hair has fallen out." Therefore, every responsibility must be fulfilled properly at the right time. You might be able to buy an object again if you lose it, but once life is over, it cannot be brought back. You cannot turn back lost time or reverse the mistakes and negligence committed in life. Therefore, from the age of schooling, there should be a plan regarding life. We must attach our entire life to a goal, take steps toward that goal, and make life meaningful.

We should not waste about 60 or 70 years of our life doing whatever comes to mind, like a kite with a broken string flying without any destination. We must recall the quote of renowned author Robin Sharma here: "Do not spend 75 years thinking the same way, working the same way, and call it a 'life'." This means we must constantly evaluate our thoughts and cultivate the discriminative thinking of what is right and what is wrong. We must have a goal of our own in life. During the school stage, we should listen carefully to the lessons taught by teachers in class, achieve good marks in exams, and gain a solid grasp of the relevant knowledge. We should choose a profession we love and draw up a plan with the advice of experts in the process of achieving it. Without falling into any despair or frustration, we must work hard according to our plan to reach our intended goal. Setting such a goal and working for it gives value to our lives and inspires the ten people around us who observe us. We must display skill in our profession, and our thoughts and behavior should be useful for learning more and growing further in that profession.

*A final word:*

At the final stage of life, there should be no frustration in our thoughts saying, "I should not have done that, I should have done this." There should be moments of satisfaction where we can place our hand on our chest and say, "I worked hard for the goal I desired, I made the effort required to be the way I wanted to be, I was able to make ten people smile, and I was able to inspire ten people." For that, our life must take steps toward a goal according to a plan from the very beginning.
