The birth anniversary celebrations of legendary poet Gurajada Apparao, who rendered remarkable services to Telugu literature and social reforms, were held grandly on Wednesday at Sri Thyagaraya Gana Sabha in Hyderabad.
Sponsored by the Department of Language and Culture of Telangana State, the event took place on the Kala Subba Rao stage at Gana Sabha as part of the 'Endaro Mahanubhavulu – Madhura Smrutulu' (Many Great Souls – Sweet Memories) program. Dr. Enugu Narasimha Reddy, IAS, Director of the Telangana Department of Language and Culture, attended the event as the chief guest. Sri Thyagaraya Gana Sabha President Kala V.S. Janardhan Murthy presided over the meeting. Poet and literary figure Smt. Shailaja Mitra, Vrindavanam Organization President Y. Subramanyam, and others participated as distinguished guests.
On this occasion, floral tributes were paid to the portrait of Gurajada Apparao. Later, speakers elaborated on his services to Telugu literature, his contribution to social awakening, and his progressive ideology. They stated that Gurajada Apparao, who questioned superstitions, inequalities, and social evil practices in society through his writings, remains permanent in the history of Telugu literature.
Speakers mentioned that Gurajada's message, "Desamante mattikadoy... desamante manushuloy" (A country is not just about soil... a country is made of its people), continues to guide society today. They recalled that his writings fostered social responsibility, humanitarian outlook, and a sense of equality among the people. Especially through works like 'Kanyasulkam', he clearly reflected society's problems and proclaimed the need for reforms.
Prominent figures called upon everyone to introduce Gurajada's literary wealth to future generations and to carry forward his ideals. The event, organized under the auspices of Sri Thyagaraya Gana Sabha, concluded successfully in the presence of literature enthusiasts, artists, and prominent personalities.
